Fan Invasion Erupts in Opening Match of Olympic Football Tournament

Argentina and Morocco Game Halted as Fans Crash Pitch

Crowd Trouble Overturns Equalizer in Stoppage Time

SAINT-ETIENNE, France (AP) — The opening match of the Olympic football tournament between Argentina and Morocco was marred by a fan invasion that halted play late in the match. Morocco fans stormed the pitch to protest a controversial late goal by Argentina, leading to the overturning of the equalizer and a 2-1 victory for Morocco.

Soufiane Rahimi had given Morocco a 2-0 lead with goals either side of halftime. However, Argentina rallied late and appeared to have equalized in stoppage time. However, the goal was ruled out after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR), and Morocco held on for the win.

The incident occurred just minutes after the final whistle, as Morocco fans rushed onto the pitch to protest the decision. Play was halted for several minutes as security officials attempted to restore order. Several fans were apprehended by police.

The fan invasion cast a shadow over what was otherwise a thrilling match between two of the tournament favorites. Argentina, the reigning Olympic champions, will now look to regroup in their next match against Australia, while Morocco will face Spain.
