Jonathan Groff Had Been Mentally Preparing for His Big Moment in The Matrix Resurrections

Jonathan Groff has been a fan of The Matrix franchise since he was a teenager, so he was thrilled when he was cast in The Matrix Resurrections. However, he didn't realize he was auditioning for the role of Agent Smith until the very end of the process.

"I thought I was auditioning for a different role," Groff said in an interview with Variety. "I didn't know what I was auditioning for until I got to the end of the process and they said, 'Oh, by the way, you're playing Agent Smith.'"

Groff was initially hesitant to take on the role, as he didn't want to mess with such an iconic character. However, he eventually agreed, and he's glad he did.

"It was a lot of fun to play Agent Smith," Groff said. "He's such a complex and interesting character. I think I brought a different energy to the role than Hugo Weaving did, but I still wanted to be faithful to the character."
